Abstract: The effects of lanthanide rare earth (RE) substitution into two layer bismuth superconductors are studied. Quenching the RE substituted superconductors, Bi1.55Pb0.45Sr2RE0.2Ca0.8Cu2Oz, is used to lower the hole concentration to the levels where above 90 K superconductivity can be achieved. Lead substitution is used to facilitate the growth of single phase specimens. Variation in the values of Tcfor the various RE substituted superconductors is seen to be governed mainly by the value of the hole concentration in each of the superconductors. © 1991.
