    Anthropometric studies in pre-school children in northeast thailand

    In studies concerning the socio-economic development of the people in two villages in a resettlement area in Northeast Thailand, anthropometric methods, being used to study the nutritional status of preschool children, indicated that growth are below optimal by comparison with British standards. In comparison with local standards, growth rate was similar to that of healthy Thai children as determined in 1959 but below that of Bangkok kindergarten children (1969). The latter had growth rates similar to British standard whereas rural Thai children had growth rates similar to British children only in the first 10 to 12 months of life. Results from the anthropometric studies in determining nutritional status are compared with biochemical results. It was concluded that anthropometric measurements are easier to perform and yield information that agrees qualitatively with the general picture concerning nutritional status obtainable by biochemical methods. © 1974, Center for Academic Publications Japan.     Cytogenetic and Hybridization Studies among 3 Strains Morphologically variated and belonging to Anopheles minimus Theobald from Japan and Thailand

    In genetic studies on Anopheles minimus cytogenetic observations and hybridization tests were performed on 3 strains belonging to Anopheles minimus and their hybrids, in order to know cytotaxonomic informations and phylogenetic relationships among geographical populations of the species due to their morphological varieties. The results were revealed their homosequencial cytomorphology, especially in their banding sequencies of polytene chromosomes of both salivary glands and ovarian nurce cells. No naturally occurring polymorphism was described from the observations of each 50 slides of the 3 strains, one from Ishigaki Island, Japan other 2 from Kanchanaburi, Thailand; relating to them morphological varieties were also qualified among them. Complete synaptic salivary gland polytene chromosomes were observed among their F1 hybrids from 3 combinations of crosses among the strains. These chromosomal informations gave standarized polytene chromosome map and its description was made. Hybridization experiment among the 3 strains revealed some grades of postcoupuratory reproductive isolation-phenomenon between ISG strain and KCH-1 strain whereas not between ISG and KCH-2 one.     Observation on the reduction of the prevalence of Malayan filariasis in Chumphon province of South Thailand

    Further studies on malayan filariasis were made at Bangluke canton of Chumphon province of South Thailand, where mass drug treatment was not applied. It was found after 9 years that there was a marked reduction in filariasis in the area. The filariasis infection rate being decreased from 14.1 to 1.9%, the microfilarial rate from 10.8 to 0.9%, and the elephantiasis rate from 3.3 to 1.0%, and the mean microfilarial density among positive cases being decreased from 27.6 to 6.6 per 20 c.mm blood. Dissection of 1,893 Mansonia mosquitoes revealed the finding of only stage I and stage II larvae of B. malayi in seven M. annulifera and M. indiana. The reduction in the filariasis infection was assumed to be due to the interruption of transmission of filariasis cycle in the mosquitoes resulting from DDT spraying operation of the Malaria Eradication Programme of the Thai Government. There were also some positive cases moving out of the area. The rural development programme of the Thai Government also played another important role in the reduction in the prevalence of malayan filariasis in this area.

    The periodicity of Brugia malayi in South Thailand

    The periodicity of Brugia malayi microfilariae were studied in the two endemic areas of South Thailand i.e. in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces. It was found that in Pattani province the microfilariae had a markedly nocturnal periodicity character, while in Narathiwat province they were of a nocturnal sub-periodic type. Moreover, the microfilariae of periodic form in Giemsa stained blood films usually had 'unsheathed' appearance (71.5%), while those of sub-periodic type were mostly of 'sheathed' form (93.4%).
