Additionally, the association between objectively assessed chewing function and frailty has not been well studied. The present cross-sectional study tested the hypothesis that objectively measured poor chewing ability is associated with frailty in community-dwelling older Thai adults. Methods: The study population comprised 141 people in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand (median age 72 years). Demographic and clinical data were collected at a community center. Participants were asked to chew a gum designed for assessing chewing ability. The differences in gum color before and after chewing (ΔE*ab) were calculated and used as the exposure variable, where a lower ΔE*ab indicates lower chewing ability. Frailty phenotypes were defined by weakness, slowness, weight loss, low physical activity level and exhaustion components, and used as the outcome variable. Participants with three or more components were considered frail, and those with one or two components were considered pre-frail. Ordinal logistic regression analyses were carried out to assess the association of objective chewing ability with frailty. Results: Of the 141 participants, 32 (22.7%) were categorized as frail and 78 (55.3%) as pre-frail. In the analysis adjusted for demographic and health characteristics, the adjusted odds ratio of the presence and severity of frailty was significantly higher in participants with lower ΔE*ab (adjusted odds ratio for one decrease in ΔE*ab 1.05, 95% confidence interval 1.01–1.10, P = 0.03). Conclusions: Objectively measured chewing ability was significantly associated with frailty in community-dwelling older Thai adults. Aim: Religious social networks are well known for their capacity to improve individual health, yet the effects of friendship networks within the Buddhist context remain largely unknown. The present study aimed to compare health status and social support in community-dwelling older adults according to their level of Buddhist social network (BSN) involvement, and to examine the association between BSN involvement and functional health among older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 427 Buddhist community-dwelling older adults aged ≥60 years in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. Data were collected from home-based personal interviews using a structured questionnaire. Health status was defined according to the measures of basic and advanced activities of daily living (ADL), the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale and subjective quality of life. Perceived social support was assessed across the four dimensions of tangible, belonging, emotional and information support. Multiple logistic regression was used for analysis. Results: Older adults with BSN involvement reported better functional, mental and social health status, and perceived greater social support than those without BSN involvement. In addition, BSN involvement was positively associated with independence in basic and advanced ADL. After adjusting for age, sex, education, income, morbidity and depressive symptoms, BSN showed a strong association with advanced ADL and a weak association with basic ADL. Conclusion: The results show that involvement in BSN could contribute positively to functional health, particularly with regard to advanced ADL. Addressing the need for involvement in these networks by older adults might help delay functional decline and save on healthcare costs.Publication Metadata only Buddhist temple: A religious capital approach for preparing Thailand toward the aging society(2014-01-01) Saowapa Pornsiripongse; Kwanchit Sasiwongsaroj; Patcharin Ketjamnong; Mahidol University© Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014. Thailand is experiencing a rapid increase in older population. The phenomenon has attracted the attention of various sectors in order to develop suitable guidelines to accommodate this situation. The objective of this chapter is to propose an alternative for the care of older persons by analyzing the plausibility of using Buddhist temples, which are numerous and exist in almost every community, as care centers for the well-being of the elderly. The analysis was based on a social capital approach through the religious capital that temples retain, including Dharma, personnel, rituals, and property (financial capital, physical capital, human capital, cultural capital, and social capital). This was to determine how much potential temples have in caring for older people. The analysis also took into consideration state policies and operations concerning the elderly. It was found that temples have potential in caring for the well-being of older people without conflicting with religious discipline. However, they must be improved in terms of knowledge of monks, collaboration with their communities and temple networks, and temple environment. Operations on the care of the elderly should be varied in accordance with the contexts of the temples and their communities.Publication Open Access Buddhist Temple: the well-being space for the aged in Thailand(2012-01) Kwanchit Sasiwongsaroj; Saowapa Pornsiripongse; Yongyuth Burasith; Patcharin Ketjamnong; Nutarat Koosakulrat; Mahidol University. Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of AsiaThe world is experiencing an increase in the number of elderly people. This global trend is more advanced in western countries. However, many Asian countries are experiencing the same phenomenon, and within the next few decades, Asia will be the “oldest” region in the world. Adverse effects from a rapidly aging population on society and economy are evident; therefore, policy options are being created to deal with these problems. Nevertheless alternative solutions are still needed. As Asia is the region with the highest proportion of Buddhists in the world and Buddhist principles are embedded within belief systems of followers, the idea of using religious space to support the aging population might be worthy of consideration. This academic interest raises two questions: (1) beyond the use of temple space for preserving and spreading Buddhist teachings, do monastic institutions manage temple space for the benefit of elderly ?, and (2) how do such ancillary activities contribute to the well-being of the aged? This paper uses evidence from Thailand, a country with a large number of Buddhist temples (37,075), to explore these issues. The synthesis reveals that beyond religious activities, numerous secular activities are conducted at temples. These activities conform to the Buddhist worldview on aging and seem to actively promote the well-being of the aged in three dimensions; namely, physical and psychological health, lifelong learning, and social well-being. This article seeks to refocus attention away from governmental management of the elderly towards local management, in the belief that this would be particularly helpful in parts of Asia where institutional welfare is somewhat unreliable. As the temple is a component of the community and plays an important role in the cultural life of Buddhists, it is argued that using temple space can serve as an alternative approach to the development of appropriate policies aimed at enhancing the well-being of the aged in the Buddhist world.Publication Open Access Child mortality inequality between Thais and hilltribes in Thailand: study from population and housing census 2000(2008-01) Kwanchit Sasiwongsaroj; Chanya Sethaput; จรรยา เศรษฐบุตร; Patama Vapattanawong; ปัทมา ว่าพัฒนวงศ์; Ford, Kathleen; Boonlert Leoprapai; Mahidol University. Institute for Population and Social ResearchThis study is undertaken to explore levels and trends of under-five mortality rates (U5MR) at the national level among general Thais and 9 hilltribes as well as compare the rates across socioeconomic strata within and between ethnic groups by making use of information on the 2000 census. The Trussell version of the Brass indirect method was employed to estimate U5MR. The gap of mortality inequality was estimated by both absolute and relative difference. The findings indicated that U5MR in all hilltribes were comparatively higher than Thais over time. Yet, the mortality differentials between them tended to shrink eventually. The variations of U5MR among studied ethnic groups rely on their SES: Thais with a large proportion in high SES were more likely to enjoy low death rates than their counterparts. Further, inequalities in child mortality evidently found within ethnic group; the rates often fell in a continuous linear gradient from the lowest to the highest SES. The socioeconomic differences in child mortality were relatively large among hilltribes, but they were small among Thais. These mortality disparities between Thais and hilltribes require policy attention to reduce excess deaths by focusing on both social and economic disadvantages faced by hilltribe families.Item Metadata only Inequality of child mortality among ethnic groups in Thailand : a quantitative and qualitative study(Mahidol University. It examines the museum's role in promoting nationalism using Althusser's ideology framework, combined with concepts of nationalism and museum studies. The findings indicate that the National Aviation Museum of the Royal Thai Air Force. presents the main aspects of Thai nationalism—nation, religion, and monarchy—through exhibitions on the history of aviation in Thailand, the development of the Royal Thai Air Force, and its missions from the past to the present. The museum employs Althusser's ideological mechanisms such as reproduction, naturalization, a mix of reality and imagination, and the creation of binary relationships. These are supplemented by artifacts representing air power, such as aircraft and illustrations, and elements like color schemes that evoke the Royal Thai Air Force to instill patriotism, which is consistent with the role of military museums in promoting nationalist ideology. However, the presentation lacks engagement between the Royal Thai Air Force and the public. The storytelling methods fail to connect the social context of different eras with significant Air Force events, providing only factual information. This makes it difficult for visitors to synthesize the information to gain a deeper understanding. Additionally, the elements that should evoke emotional engagement, such as lighting, color, and sound, do not effectively enhance the narrative's emotional impact.Item Metadata only The perception of menopausal women on menopause and health management : a case study of Nhong Ngoo Hao village, Samutprakarn province(Mahidol University.
