Abstract
This thematic research focuses on transcribing five selected songs to analyze the drumming techniques of four renowned musicians, Dave Weckl, Edu Ribeiro, Isac Jamba, and Morten Lund, within the Latin jazz fusion style. Additionally, this research outlines practice methods for these songs, preparing materials and plans that assist jazz drummers in mastering the Latin fusion style. Dave Weckl, Edu Ribeiro, Isac Jamba, and Morten Lund are recognized as some of the most iconic drummers in the Latin jazz fusion genre, this recital’s repertoire draws from influential recordings by these musicians across various musical genres. The selected songs include (1) “Festival De Ritmo” by Dave Weckl, (2) “Cebola No Frevo” by Edu Ribeiro, (3) “Hard Eights” by Lyle Mays, (4) “Virando A Esquina” by Isac Jamba, (5) “Hermeletica” by Isac Jamba. The Graduate Jazz Drum recital occurred at A407, College of Music, Mahidol University, on February 27, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Implications of the Thematic Paper: This research summarizes the performance techniques and improvisational methods of four musicians in the Latin jazz fusion style of drumming by transcribing and analyzing five selected pieces. Transcribing and analyzing other musicians' performances can provide a valuable reference for interpretation and expression, enriching one's musical vocabulary. By actively participating in these practices, musicians can continually expand their musical knowledge, refine their performance techniques, and ultimately reach new heights in their craft and creative expression.
