Foil; Kevin R. MacAluso; LSU School of Veterinary Medicine; Mahidol University; UT Medical Branch at Galveston; Louisiana State UniversityBackground: Cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, are known biological vectors for Rickettsia felis. Rickettsial transmission can be vertical via transovarial transmission within a flea population, as well as horizontal between fleas through a bloodmeal.... The previously undescribed infection kinetics of bloodmeal-acquired R. felis in cat fleas provides insight into the R. felis-flea interaction. Findings. In the present study, dissemination of R. felis in previously uninfected cat fleas fed an R. felis-infectedPublication Metadata only Correlation of host specificity, environmental factors and oriental rat flea abundance(2015-01-01) Kruawan Chotelersak; Chamnarn Apiwathnasorn; Sungsit Sungvornyothin; Chotechuang Panasoponkul; Yudthana Samung; Jiraporn Ruangsittichai; Mahidol University© 2015, Southeast Asian Journal of Medicine and Public Health. All rights reserved. Fleas are the vectors of many communicable diseases that are normally found in oriental rats. Climate and environmental changes influence the habitat and migration... patterns of vectors. In this study, the oriental rat flea abundance, represented as total flea index, was determined in correlation to host specificity and various environmental factors. The number of hosts and fleas calculated from 3 specific habitatsPublication Open Access Dissemination of bloodmeal acquired Rickettsia felis in cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis(2013) Chutima Thepparit; Supanee Hirunkanokpun; Popov, Vsevolod L; Foil, Lane D; Macaluso, Kevin R; Mahidol University. They feed on the blood of their hosts and serve as vectors... of cat flea taxonomic levels. Four species of medically important Pulicidae fleas were collected from hosts in various provinces of Thailand and identified based on their distinctive morphological characteristics: Xenopsylla cheopis, EchidnophagaPublication Metadata only Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Bartonella in ticks and fleas from dogs and cats in Bangkok(2011-10-01) Suporn Foongladda; Dutsadee Inthawong; Uraiwan Kositanont; Jariyanart Gaywee; Mahidol University; Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, ThailandFlea and tick specimens (5-10 fleas or ticks) on dogs and cats from various sites in Bangkok were tested by polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing to detect DNA of bacteria Rickettsia (gltA and 17kDa genes), Anaplasmataceae (16S rRNA gene...), and Bartonella (pap31 and its genes). We confirmed that Rickettsia sp. related to Rickettsia felis was detected in 66 of 98 (67.4%) flea specimens from dogs, whereas 8 Bartonella henselae and 2 Bartonella clarridgeiae were detected in 10 of 54 (18.5%) fleaItem Metadata only Seroprevalence and factors related to scrub typhus and murine typhus infections in hill tribe patients at 4 hospitals in Chiang Mai province(Mahidol University.
