We compared its 24-hr serum level and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) after the single administration of 15-mb dose of betacarotene in the form of commercial capsule or carrot to 20 healthy Thai volunteers. The results revealed similar betacarotene serum level at any time after betacarotene capsule or carrot. The AUC(0-24 hr) also shows no significant difference. No acute toxicity was found during the study. It is concluded that the ingestion of betacarotene in the commercial dosage form or natural source will achieve the same serum level that is needed.เบตาแคโรทีนเป็นสารอาหารตัวต้นของวิตามินเอที่พบในผักและผลไม้สีเขียวเข้มและสีเหลืองถึงสีส้ม ปัจจุบันมีการนำมาใช้รักษาภาวะพร่องวิตามินเอ การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อทราบระดับเบตาแคโรทีนในซีรัม และพื้นที่ใต้กราฟความเข้มข้นกับเวลาเมื่อให้เบตาแคโรทีนขนาด 15 มก. ในรูปแคปซูลเปรียบเทียบกับแครอทแก่อาสาสมัครสุขภาพดีชาวไทยจำนวน 20 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ระดับเบตาแคโรทีนในซีรัมของอาสาสมัครมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกัน เมื่อรับประทานเบตาแคโรทีนแคปซูลหรือแครอท ขนาดพื้นที่ใต้กราฟความเข้มข้นกับเวลาในช่วงเวลา 24 ชม. ไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ในระหว่างการศึกษาไม่พบอาการพิษเฉียบพลัน การศึกษานี้สรุปได้ว่าการรับประทานเบตาแคโรทีนในลักษณะผลิตภัณฑ์สำเร็จรูปหรือผลิตภัณฑ์ธรรมชาติสามารถให้ระดับในซีรัมที่ต้องการได้เหมือนกัน2.7 mbapplication/pdfengMahidol UniversityBetacarotenebioavailabilityBetacarotene capsuleCarrotProvitamin AวารสารสมุนไพรResearch ArticleFaculty of Pharmacy Mahidol University
