A basal salt solution containing l-threonine (TBSS) performed significantly better than trypticase soy broth containing crystal violet and colistin 50 mg/L (CVC50), both in isolation rate and suppression of overgrowth of other organisms, but the addition of colistin to TBSS gave the best results overall. In a survey in north-eastern Thailand, P. pseudomallei was recovered from 114 (68%) of the 167 sites tested.
