It is called primary if the carcinoma was found in the cystic duct only. However, in a large number of cases in the series reported carcinoma is found in the extra hepatic duct in general. The 4 patients have described had carcinoma of the cystic duct associated with opisthorchiasis (Opisthorchis viverrini).
