Four contrastive linking adverbials - including however, rather, nevertheless, and yet - were analyzed using Braun & Clarke’s (2006) theoretical notions of thematic analysis as an analytical framework. With the qualitative research approach, a total of 800 concordance lines in academic writing genre from three corpora, including the ICNALE, the TLEC, and the BAWE, were analyzed by three qualified raters. The results revealed Thai EFL writers used fewer lexical semantic functions of the target adverbials than the native speaker writers did. The Thai EFL writers also misused such adverbials with their own articulations. However, in both groups, some lexical semantic functions were ranked at comparable levels. Moreover, most Thai EFL writers have a strong preference for the use of the lexical semantic function of opposition, which is opposed to the use of addition from those of native speaker writers. In addition to discussing new findings, the research also pointed out contributions to language pedagogy. Implication of the thematic paper: The findings of the current study can potentially contribute to the improvement of learning and teaching of English academic writing.
