Item Metadata only The relationship between stress, self-esteem, and health promoting behaviors of adolescents in Bangkok Metropolitan(Mahidol University. Mahidol University Library and Knowledge Center, 2004) Tanaporn Thammatuksa; Pornpimon ChandanasotthiThe purpose of this research was to study the relationship between stress, self-esteem and health promoting behaviors of adolescents. The sample group comprised 250 adolescents aged between 10 - 19 years living in Bangkok metropolitan. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), the Self-esteem Questionnaire, and the Culturally Modified Adolescent Lifestyle Questionnaire were used for data collection. Statistical analysis was done using mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression with statistically significant level at 0.05. Results showed that most of the adolescents had normal levels of overall stress, somatic symptoms, anxiety and insomnia, social dysfunction and severe depression. Most of the adolescents also had a moderate level of self-esteem and overall health promoting behavior. The adolescents had higher scores of health promoting behavior on safety compared to identity awareness, social support, physical participation, nutrition, stress management and health awareness ( x = 3.88, 3.81, 3.69, 3.49, 3.34, 3.29 and 3.08, respectively). Age, GPA, allowance, and self-esteem had a positive relationship with health promoting behavior (p-value < 0.05) while stress had a negative relationship with health promoting behavior (r= - 0.265, p - value > 0.05). The results also showed that GPA, age, self-esteem and stress altogether could predict 24.3% of variance in health promoting behaviors of adolescents. The results of this study provide guidance for family and relatives of adolescents to support and help adolescents to build self-esteem and enhance health promoting behavior of adolescents.
