Item Metadata only Preparation of clay-rubber composites(Mahidol University. Mahidol University Library and Knowledge Center, 2001) Withoo Siriwong; Nopadol Chaikum; Chakrit Sirisinha; Laddawan PdungsapClays have been used as filler in rubber composites but they are non-reinforcing for rubber. Clays are usually modified with silane coupling agents to improve the reinforcing effect. The clay used in this study is kaolinite from Ranong, Thailand. It was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APS) in various mixing proportions. The surface modified clays were investigated by FTIR Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Natural rubber (NR) containing surface modified clays as filler was found to have better properties than NR containing untreated clay. The concentration of 5-10 g 3-APS/100 g clay seemed to have much effect on properties improvement of NR. At 40 phr filler loading, improvement in properties of NR was maximum. As compared to the results of NR filled with clays surface modified by Bis(3-triethoxysil ylpropyl)tetrasulphane (Si69), NR containing clays surface modified by 3-APS gave better properties. Nevertheless, the physical properties of NR containing surface modified clays were not as good as those of NR containing silica as filler.
