| dc.description.abstract | The Vietnamese news headlines were collected from the daily newspapers "Hà Nội Mới, Nhân dân, Sài Gòn and Sài Gòn Giải phóng all of which are widely available and sold inexpensively, between 1998-2001. A total of 1,100 news headlines were analysed for their syntactic structures. The result of the study is as follows: There were a total of 11 syntactic structures found: noun phrases (119 items-10.28%), prepositional phrases (12 items-1.09%), negative sentences (7 items-0.64%), interrogative sentences (20 items-2.00%), serial verb constructions (142 items-12.91%), passive constructions (8 items-0.73%), simple sentences (327 items-29.73%), subjectless sentences (146 items-13.27%), compound sentences (284 items-25.82%), complex sentences (28 items-2.55%), and paragraphs (5 items-0.45%). According to the frequency of each type of headline, the sentence is the most popular style (29.73%). This formulation conveys the message straightforwardly. Simple sentences can also be juxtaposed or conjoined as compound sentences; the compound sentence is the second most popular style (25.82%). The subjectless sentence is the third most popular type (13.27%). Paragraphs are the least popular form, comprising only 0.45% of headlines. | en_US |
