Abstract
This work focused on the study of the chromatographic fingerprints of ten selected Thai medicinal plants containing pharmacological activities, These plants include Lagerstroemia speeiosa, Passiflora foetida. Clerodendrum inerme, Blumea balsamifera, Seoparia duleis, Trieosanthes braeteata. Abutilon indicum, Houttuynia cordata, Stephania suberosa and Stephania venosa. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the ethanolic extract of these plants was performed using silica gel F 254 as an adsorbent and a mixture of chloroform and methanol, 8:2
and 9:1, as a solvent system. Results showed that the latter (9:1) provided the better results than the former (8:2) solvent system. Three selected medicinal plants, Passinora foetida (from Prajuabkerekun and Chonburi province),
Lagerstroemia speeiosa and Clerodendrum inerme were examined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a C'8 column. Factors affecting separation of constituents in the plants were flow rates, ion suppressing
agents, and types of organic modifiers. The optimum conditions were a gradient elution of acetonitrile in water containing 1% v/v 0.1 N phosphoric acid from 0-90% in 20 min using a flow rate of 0.7 ml/min and a detection wavelength at 215 nm.
