Abstract
It has been known hat capping and cost of production are the major problems in the manuhcture of paracetamol tablets. This study compared the binding property of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) with that of povidone (PVP) in paracetamol tablet formulations. HPC-M and PVP-K90 were incorporated at 0.6% and l.0% dry basis. ln addition to paracetamol, binder and either corn starch, tapioca starch or pregelatinized starches were added. The granulations were lubricated with magnesium stearate. lt was found that, regardless of tre binder, corn starch and tapioca starch did not give acceptable tablets. Pregelatinized starches appeared to give better tablsts. At 0.6% level, HPC-M produced softer and slower disintegration tablets than did PVP-K90, while tre dissolutron seemed to be comparable. At 1.0% level, PVP-K90 gave better tablets as well. The study indicated hat PVP-K9O was superior to HPGM under this test conditions.
