Cardiovascular effects of Ya-hom in human

Abstract

The effects of Ya-hom, Thai traditional recipe, on cardiovascular functions were studied in 15 healthy women aged 20-23 years old to verify its use for fainting treatment. Three grams of Ya-hom powder and lyophilized water extract of Ya-hom equivalent to 3 g of powder were dissolved in warm water and taken by the same volunteer with one week interval. Systemic blood pressure, heart rate, forearm cutaneous blood flow and electrocardiogram were determined before (0 min) and after taking Ya-hom or water at 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50 and 60 min. Ya-hom powder and its water extract had no effect on EKG, heart rate and forearm cutaneous blood flow. Ya-hom powder did not change systolic blood pressure. However, it significantly increased diastolic blood pressure at 20, 50 and 60 min and increased mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) at 20, 30 and 50 min but decreased pulse pressure at 25 and 60 min when compared with those before taking Ya-hom. Water extract of Ya-hom only significantly increased MAP at 60 min. This dominant increasing blood pressure effect of Ya-hom supports the use of Ya-hom for the treatment of fainting. The loss effect of water extract of Ya-hom may be due to less active component being extracted compared to those component in Ya-hom powder.
