Abstract
Significant political shortcomings at the national level during the 1890s and 1900s ensured that Mexico by 1910 was in a position approaching revolution. Political divisiveness exposed the fragile economic structures of the regime of Porfirio Diaz to the scrutiny of all social levels. The celebration of the centenary of Independence provided the facade behind which political incompetence and social dislocation remained at least partially hidden from view.Failure to resolve the question of presidential succession in the 1900s proved to be the immediate cause of political disintegration which began within the cientificos of the Diaz regime itself. Be that as it may, the Mexican
Revolution was set in motion by the economic mechanisms of the Reform era.
Profound social changes wrought by the Constitution of 1917 would ultimately
alter the rural and urban sectors of Mexican society.
