Promoting 21st century skills in early childhood by aesthetics of music : a systematic review
(Mahidol University. Mahidol University Library and Knowledge Center, 2024) Natta Bhumadhana; Vasunun Chumchua; Sawannee Sutheeworapong
The objectives of this study is to determine the impact of aesthetic music in early childhood cognitive neuroscience in preparation for the 21st-century by using a systematic review study. Electronic databases were searched from October to November 2018. Research articles were chosen for analysis based on the following criteria: published in English, peerreviewed journals, and provided impact factors from 2008 to 2018. The study evaluated the effects of music intervention with at least one normal child, aged 3 to 6 years old. The study included measurement of at least one dependent variable related to cognitive neuroscience skills. Articles were extracted as text files and imported into the EndNote and the information were recorded into the categorized spreadsheet. Study quality and risk of bias were assessed in March 2019. Then the data were analyzed and all information synthesized in June 2019. Five studies from 6451 studies met the inclusion criteria. Four out of the five studies found a beneficial effect on the music intervention group compared to the control group. These outcomes included language development, which correlated with changes in functional brain plasticity during an executive function task. Also, one study found beneficial to identified emotions. This study showed the advantage of music intervention on cognitive neuroscience skills. As the study focused only on healthy children, it lacks more information and could not provide available evidence. Further study is needed to strengthen the evidence base in this area.
