Abstract
Silk sericin (SS) is a natural protein derived from silkworm Bombyx mori. It is applicable as an antioxidant in the field of medicines, cosmetics, foods, and food additive SS protein can be blended with polymers, to produce materials with improved properties. SS films were prepared using different polymers which are polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymer (Plu) and glycerine (G) and fixed concentration of SS (3.0% w/v). The physical properties and some structure characteristics of siricin films were analyzed. The result showed that SS films prepared by cast method containing 3.0 % w/v SS with 2%PVA+1%G, 2%PVA+2%G, 0.2%Plu-F68+1%G, 0.2%Plu+2%G, 2%PVA and 1%G showed good film property from observation. The solubility studies showed that SS was rapidest released from film containing 3%SS+2%PVA which released all SS content within 10 minute whereas other films released all SS content within 1 hour. Humidity-absorption studies of SS film showed that 3%SS+2%PVA+2%G film had the highest moisture absorption rate after incubated in 70-80% humidity environment.
