Abstract

1. 1. The urinary bladder of the tortoise, Damonia subtrijuga, acidified its mucosal surface and increased the pH at its serosal surface in vitro. 2. 2. Acetazolamide reduced this acid-base transport, apparently by reducing the H + or HCO 3 - available for transport. 3. 3. Betazole increased acid-base transport, apparently by increasing the H + or HCO 3 - available for transport, and by increasing the permeability of the mucosal epithelial cells. 4. 4. HCO 3 - at the mucosal surface increased, and at the serosal surface decreased, acid-base transport. © 1972.
