คำเรียกข้าวในภาษาตระกูลออสโตรเอเชียติก: ที่มาและการกระจาย

Abstract

คำเรียกข้าวในภาษาตระกูลออสโตรเอเชียติกมีจำนวนหลายคำ ขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพของเมล็ด ข้าว ตั้งแต่เมล็ดข้าวธรรมชาติ จนผ่านกระบวนการขัดสีเอาเปลือกออก และนำไปหุงจนสุก เพื่อการบริโภค บทความนี้ได้รวบรวมคำศัพท์ที่ใช้เรียกเมล็ดข้าวตามสภาพธรรมชาติ (ข้าวเปลือก) และข้าวที่สีเอาเปลือกออกแล้ว (ข้าวสาร) ของภาษาต่างๆ ในตระกูลออสโตร เอเชียติก นำมาศึกษาเปรียบเทียบเพื่อหาคำศัพท์ดั้งเดิมและการกระจายของคำศัพท์ทั้ง 2 คำ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า คำศัพท์ทั้งสองคำดังกล่าว ได้กระจายจากบริเวณพื้นที่ภาษา ออสโตรเอเชียติกไปทางตะวันออก ไปสู่บริเวณหมู่เกาะต่างๆ ส่วนทางตะวันตกนั้นกระจาย จากจีนสู่อินเดีย และขึ้นไปทางเปอร์เซีย นอกจากนี้ จากการเปรียบเทียบคำศัพท์ที่รวบรวม มาจึงได้สืบสร้างคำศัพท์ดั้งเดิมของคำเรียก "ข้าวเปลือก" ในภาษาโปรโตออสโตรเอเชียติก ได้ คือ *C.rac

There are many words for rice in Austroasiatic languages, depending on the nature of a particular rice grain. This ranges from unhusked to milled, husked and cooked rice ready for consumption. In this article, the words used to call paddy and husked rice in different Austroasiatic languages are gathered and compared so as to determine their proto-forms and distribution. The study reveals the spread to the Archipelagos on the east as well as to India and Persia on the west. The comparative method also shows that the word “paddy” can be reconstructed as *C.rac in Proto-Austroasiatic.
