A garden provides a connection between mind, body, and personal preferences, therefore, the idea of self-exercise in the garden at home could be a practical, creative, economical, and pleasant way to help patients in improving their quality of life. Sunlight, wind and the sound of running water definitely enhance the healing process and would be beneficial for healthy people as well. Physical therapists were consulted for proposed guidelines on plant-oriented therapeutic landscape for therapy and exercises to be accompanied with photographs and illustrations of plant used. The therapists recommended that safety was a prime consideration in the therapeutic garden design. A wide variety of exercises could benefit patients. Trees, shrubs, vines, and ground covers are practical for many exercises involving arm and shoulder movement and obstacle avoidance while walking. The horticultural activities are also useful. Various plant textures could stimulate the sense of touch. The garden setting would encourage the users to do more self-exercise. | en_US |
