Abstract

A meshless method called smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) was applied to a barotropic vorticity equation of the atmosphere to investigate its accuracy. The tensor product weight function for the SPH method was a quartic spline function. Results from the SPH approximation of the equation on a sphere showed that errors can occur near the boundary due to asymmetry of the weight function at the boundary. This problem was partially solved by using the ghost particle technique. © 2013 A. Koomsubsiri et al.
