The differences and similarities between the different high-Tcsuperconductors are examined within the framework of the phenomological Ginzburg-Landau theory. It is argued that most of the "real" changes in the Tc's of the superconductors are due to changes in the interlayer (between unit cells) coupling of the order parameters associated with adjacent CuO layers. It is shown that the suppression of the isotope effects can be understood within this approach. © 1991.en_US
