A chiral compound is dissolved in a series of nematic liquid crystalline solvents of varying chain length to produce induced cholesteric phases. Using infrared techniques, it is found that the helical twisting power of the two chiral compounds investigated show an odd-even effect. This can be rationalized as the consequence of the odd-even effect in the order parameter of the nematic host phases. © 1981.en_US
