Perceived age discrimination among older adults in India: Results of a national survey in 2017-2018

Abstract

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of perceived age discrimination among older adults in a national population survey in India. The sample included 52,933 older adults (≥50 years) from a cross-sectional national community-dwelling survey in India in 2017-2018. Results indicate that the prevalence of perceived age discrimination (PAD) was 9.5%, 9.7% among women, and 9.3% among men. In the adjusted logistic regression analysis, older age, no education and food insecurity were positively associated with PAD, while medium subjective socioeconomic status, Muslim, Christian and Sikh were negatively associated with PAD. In addition, in unadjusted analysis, belonging to Scheduled tribes and other backward classes were positively associated with PAD, while high subjective socioeconomic status, married, and urban residence were negatively associated with PAD. One in ten older adults in India experienced PAD, and several associated factors were identified that may be targeted to reduce age discrimination.
