Diphtheria and tetanus antitoxin levels in the maternal and cord blood of Thai infants
In many parts of the world tetanus neonatorum and diphtheria are serious problems and the immunologic status of the infants and their mothers is largely unknown. Antitoxin levels for these two diseases were determined in 109 pairs of mothers and infants in Thailand using an indirect hemagglutination technique. Antitoxin levels were found to be inadequate in a high percentage of mothers while infants had even less protection with only 6.4 per cent having a protective level of tetanus antitoxin. This high risk of tetanus neonatorums indicates the need for appropriate protective immunization of pregnant women.
