Title
Intestinal absorption of amino acid (AIB I 14C) and carbohydrate (D xylose) in normal Thais
Intestinal absorption of amino acid (α amino isobutyric acid; AIB 1 14 C) and carbohydrate (D xylose) were determined in 20 subjects. A comparison between the absorption for amino acid alone and amino acid plus xylose given simultaneously shows that in the presence of xylose a considerable delay occurred in the appearance of peak levels. The differences were statistically significant showing that D xylose inhibits amino acid absorption in a healthy human. Thus it is postulated that a large amount of carbohydrates in a Thai diet may suppress the absorption of amino acids by the intestinal epithelium.
