In order to provide a foundation for discussion on translation and interpreting (TI) education, this article aims to introduce useful data to identify the Thai job market's needs of Japanese-speaking Thai Translators and Interpreters (JTTIs) and distinguish the relevant competencies of JTTIs, including knowledge, skills, and attributes (KSAs). An online-based needs survey of JTTIs in the Thai marketplace was carried out and the expected KSAs of JTTIs were identified through a job task analysis. There were 395 data samples selected for inclusion in the database analysis. The study reveals that JTTIs are in highest demand in the Thai market. As for KSAs, Japanese language skills were emphasized over other specialized competencies for TI. The Japanese proficiency level required was upper intermediate or N2-level based on Japanese language proficiency test. The overall findings have practical implications for TI course design such as the issues of setting learning outcomes, teaching approaches, and the language proficiency level of students enrolled in those courses. Furthermore, to respond to the Thai market's needs, it is important to not only focus on development of Japanese language proficiency but to also cultivate students' TI literacy in order to ensure professional-level TI services.
