Anti Hb Bart's antibody was produced in a rabbit after weekly injection with Hb Bart's obtained from hemolysate of a baby with Hb Bart's hydrops fetalis. The antibody was specific for Hb Bart's without cross reaction to Hb F. This antibody could detect Hb Bart's by the capillary tube precipitin test at the concentration of 0.00125 mg/ml. The majority of hemolysates from normal persons gave no precipitation with Hb Bart's antiserum, while in all suspected cases of α thalassemia traits the test was positive. The test was positive in all cases of Hb H disease. The results indicate that the immunologic detection of Hb Bart's should be very useful for the diagnosis of α thalassemias, especially for α thalassemia traits.en_US
