Problems: To assess the prevalence, severity and characteristics of cumulative trauma disorders involving the upper extremity in rubber tree plantation workers. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the four southernmost provinces of Thailand between 1989 and 1994. There were 2609 workers, 1006 females and 1603 males. Their ages ranged from 28 to 69 years. Each worker was interviewed and a physical examination was carried out. Results: Significant chronic pain and disability in the upper extremity were found in 560 workers (21.5%). One hundred and seventy-one (6.5%) needed regular medical treatment. The most common condition was carpal tunnel syndrome, followed by ulnar wrist pain, de Quervain disease, and trigger finger. About 34% of the patients who had chronic upper extremity pain had bilateral involvement. Conclusion: Chronic upper extremity pain is a significant problem in these workers. Preventative methods, such as exercise and redesigning the worker's tools are now under investigation.en_US
