The effect of the orthorhombic-tetragonal structural phase transition on the Tc's of the high temperature superconductors is studied with the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. It is shown that the transition from the tetragonal phase to the orthorhombic phase passes through a tetragonal phase in which metastable orthorhombic states can coexist. The coupling of the superconducting order parameter to the structural order parameter (orthorhombicity) is shown to lead to the systematic enhancement of the Tc's observed in the "124" superconductors. © 1991.en_US
