Abstract
Serum and red cell folate and folate binding protein (FABP) concentrations were determined from 80 cord blood samples from full term infants, 20 paired samples from maternal and cord blood, and also from pregnant and non-pregnant women. Serum and red cell folate and serum total folate binding protein (TFBP) levels were found to be higher in cord blood than in maternal blood, pregnant and non-pregnant women. But serum unsaturated folate binding protein (UFBP) levels in pregnant women and mother's blood were significantly higher than in cord blood. There was no relationship between serum folate levels in cord blood and maternal blood. The correlation between serum folate levels and serum SFBP and serum TFBP levels were observed in cord blood in the present study. The mechanism of transplacental transportation of folic acid from mother to fetus was discussed.
