Analysis of Master Plan for the World Heritage Sites in Thailand: A Documentary Research

Abstract

The paper is a discussion of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization—UNESCO cultural sites in Thailand (focusing on Sukhothai, and Ayutthaya) , based both on their historical and tourism master plans. Applying textual analysis methodology to those documents, they demonstrate how historical and cultural events determined heritage policies during early 1960s up to now. Those policies also shaped in the Heritage and Tourism master plans of those sites, which lead to gentrification of the heritage, the actual Heritagescape, as well as an educational perspective of the heritage sites. But the Heritagescape and tourism enhancement should not have been the main aims for the registration to the World Heritage list, but protection of the heritage sites for future generations.
