ผลของยาสูบไร้ควันต่อสุขภาพช่องปาก

Abstract

แม้ว่าสถานการณ์การสูบบุหรี่ในประเทศไทยจะชี้ให้เห็นถึงการลดลงของการสูบบุหรี่ แต่ก็ยังมีผู้สูบบุหรี่อีกจำนวนมาก ในปัจจุบันได้มีการรณรงค์อย่างกว้างขวางให้ประชาชนตระหนักถึงผลเสียของการสูบบุหรี่ต่อสุขภาพร่างกายโดยทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชนได้ให้ความสำคัญต่อผลกระทบของบุหรี่ รวมทั้งการได้รับควันบุหรี่มือสอง นอกจากการสูบบุหรี่แล้ว ในประเทศไทยยังมีการใช้ยาสูบไร้ฟัน (smokeless tobacco) ประเภทยาเส้นในรูปแบบอื่น ๆ อีกเช่น การใช้ร่วมกันกับการกินหมาก เป็นต้น ในต่างประเทศมีการบริโภคยาสูบไร้ควันในรูปแบบต่างๆ กัน ซึ่งถึงแม้ว่าในบางประเทศจะมีการรณรงค์ให้ใช้ยาสูบไร้ควันในรูปแบบแทนการสูบบุหรี่เนื่องจากพบว่าการใช้ยาสูบไร้ควันมีอันตรายน้อยกว่าการสูบบุหรี่ แต่การใช้ยาสูบไร้ควันก็ยังมีอันตรายน้อยกว่ามากเมื่อเทียบกับการไม่ใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์ใดๆ เลย เนื่องจากในอนาคตอาจมีการบริโภคผลิตภัณฑ์ยาสูบไร้ควันชนิดต่าง ๆ ในประเทศไทย บุคลากรทางการแพทย์โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งทันตบุคลากรจะมีบทบาทที่สำคัญในการให้คำปรึกษา แนะนำเกี่ยวกับผลเสียของยาสูบไร้ควันรวมทั้งการดูแลผู้ป่วยที่ใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์เหล่านี้ บทความนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อให้ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับ ชนิดและรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของผลิตภัณฑ์ยาสูบไร้ควัน สารประกอบที่มีในยาสูบไร้ควันที่มีผลต่อสุขภาพ ผลของยาสูบไร้ควันต่อสุขภาพทั่วไปและในช่องปาก บทบาทขององค์กรและหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการบริโภคยาสูบไร้ควัน ตลอดถึงข้อจำกัดในการใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์ยาสูบไร้ควันในการเลิกบุหรี่

Although the reduction of smoking has been achieved in Thailand in the past few years, many people still smoke. Currently, several authorities including government and private sectors have propagated the negative effects of smoking on general health and the effects of secondhand smoker. In addition to smoking, smokeless tobacco such as the use of tobacco in conjunction with betel nut and slake lime has been found in the suburban part of Thailand. In other countries, there are several brands of smokeless tobacco and methods to use them. Despite the fact that smokeless tobacco exerts less harm than cigarettes, the use of smokeless tobacco is still more hazardous among users than those non-users. In the near future, smokeless tobacco products may be available in Thailand, therefore, health care professional especially dental health care personnel will play an important role in giving an advice regarding the hazard of smokeless tobacco and the management of patients who use smokeless tobacco. This review gives the information on the brands and common names of the products and how to use them, chemical substances in the products which can induce several diseases including cancers, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, the effects of smokeless tobacco on general and oral health, the oral manifestations of smokeless tobacco-associated lesions, the role of several sectors in the use ofsmokeless tobacco and the limitation of the use of smokeless tobacco as a smoking cessation aid.
