Polymerase chain reaction detection revealed cryptic Plasmodium falciparum infections in 21 of 160 samples collected from Thai patients diagnosed (by microscopy) with vivax malaria. The clinical and biological significance of these mixed infections is discussed in the context of chloroquine resistance and the low inoculation rates which characterize malaria epidemiology in Thailand.en_US
