Title
Stimulation of human spermatozoal motility by caffeine
Caffeine, theophylline, and aminophylline were found to stimulate the motility of ejaculated human spermatozoa in washed suspension. Two kinds of stimulatory effect were investigated. First, 10 mM caffeine increased the percentage motility severalfold by initiating the motility of nonmotile spermatozoa. Second, 10 mM caffeine accelerated the mean motility rate by 2 fold. Glucose, fructose, pyruvate, lactate, and intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (ATP, ADP, and AMP) enhanced the first effect but not the second.
