แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับ “กาล” และ “ภาษา” ในวิชาภาษาศาสตร์ภาคประวัติและภาษาศาสตร์เปรียบเทียบ

Abstract

วิชาภาษาศาสตร์ภาคประวัติและภาษาศาสตร์เปรียบเทียบมิใช่วิชาใหม่ แต่พบว่ามีผู้ เข้าใจผิดเรื่อง “กาล” และ “ภาษา” ในวิชานี้อยู่เสมอ จึงเป็นข้อชวนคิดที่ทำให้ผู้เขียนใคร่ ขอแสดงความคิดเรื่องทั้งสองนี้ให้กระจ่างตั้งแต่เริ่มต้น เพื่อให้ความสะดวกกับผู้ที่จะ เรียนวิชาภาษาศาสตร์ภาคประวัติและภาษาศาสตร์เปรียบเทียบ

Historical and Comparative linguistics are not new subjects. However there are students who misunderstand the concepts of “Time” and “Language” in these linguistic disciplines leading to absurd research proposals such as the “Comparison of Archaic Chinese and the Thai language of Sukhodaya” or “A Comparative study of Sanskrit and Tai Ahom” etc. or even more absurd ideas. In this concise paper, an effort has been made to clarify how synchronic linguistics and diachronic linguistics define time. The paper discusses the scientific nature of linguistic study, how historical and comparative linguistics utilize the method of diachronic study. The nature of the duality of language is pointed out. The paper concludes with the outlines of purposes and procedures of historical and comparative linguistics.
