Abstract
The influence of mixed Moringa oleifera diets on lead-induced toxicity was investigated in gill and liver of Puntius alius. Fish were fed 4 weeks with M. oleiferamixed diets (0 (control), 20 and 60 mg g-1 fish food, designated as groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Then, all animals were exposed to 93.8 mg L-1of Pb(N03)2 for 24 h. The administration of Moringa-mixed diets reduced gill and liver damages. The gill of control fish showed remarkable changes including hyperplasia, epithelial lifting and telangiectasia, much more conspicuous alterations when compared to groups 2 and 3. With histochemical technique, the large amount of mucous cells was evidenced in group 3. Waterborne Pb exposure also caused structural alterations of the liver in all fish. However, the hepatocytes of group 3 fish (consuming 60 mg g-1 of M. oleifera diet) showed slight changes when compared to the other groups. The PAS sections revealed reduction in glycogen of the hepatocytes in control group with regard to those of groups 2 and 3. In conclusion, these results suggested that supplementation of M. oleifera leaves seems to reduce lead-induced toxicity in gill and liver. Mixed Moringa supplemented feeds could be a potential source in fish feed with reduction effects against lead-toxicity. ©by PSP.
