Abstract

Preoperative and postoperative visiting care is an important role of perioperative nurses. Preoperative visiting care provides for the patients in both inpatient and outpatient setting. The preoperative period is often an anxious phase for patients and their families. In order to minimize anxiety, relieving pain, promoting recovery and preventing complications occurring during the pre and postoperative period, preoperative visiting should be performed. Perioperaive nurses must have the skills and knowledge for providing information, explanation, and verification of the understanding of patients and their families before surgery. It is important to carefully identify and assess potential risks to patients undergoing surgery as well as factors affecting patients’ anxiety. Implementing the nursing process to promote individualized nursing care could help surgical patients receive continuous care throughout the surgery. Perioperative nurses must also be concerned with postoperative visiting to determine the quality of nursing care for patients during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods. In addition, this allows perioperative nurses to assess and find additional problems in the postoperative period to promote optimal care to return to normal activities for daily living. Moreover, clinical outcomes and recommendations could improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.
