A suggestion to an appropriate practice of centralized-creamatoriums in Bangkok

Abstract

The study tested this hypothesis: 'Centralized crematorium is not accepted in Thai culture'. The data from documentary examination, observation, field survey with face-to-face interviews of 493 respondents revealed that they preferred having cremation in the temple they believed and thought that the temple could best solve the environmental problems. Opinions of Bangkok residents on moving cremation places to the provided areas were not different significantly (P>0.05). They most strongly disagreed with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration due to culture and economic problems, thus accepting the proposed hypothesis. However, they agreed with the suggestion to adopt a double-chamber crematorium in the temple to mitigate pollutants and odor. The results of the study could be used in any future decision making by government and private agencies to avoid conflicts and preserve existing cultures in situations regarding the cremation practices and their impacts to the environment.

การศึกษานี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาว่าสถานที่เผาศพกลางนั้นไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับได้สาหรับวัฒนธรรมไทยหรือไม่ ทั้งนี้โดยการศึกษาจากการตรวจเอกสาร การสำรวจ การสังเกต และการสัมภาษณ์โดยตรงกับผู้ตอบจำนวน 493 คน ซึ่งแสดงความเห็นว่า การเผาศพน่าจะเกิดขึ้นที่วัด และวัดน่าจะสามารถแก้ปัญหานี้ได้ สาหรับความคิดเห็นในการย้ายสถานที่เผาศพของกรุงเทพมหานครส่วนใหญ่ไม่เห็นด้วย และส่วนที่ไม่เห็นด้วยอย่างมากนั้น คือ กลุ่มผู้บริหารกรุงเทพมหานคร ทั้งนี้ด้วยปัญหาทาง ศาสนา วัฒนธรรม และเศรษฐกิจ อย่างไรก็ตาม ส่วนใหญ่เห็นด้วยกับข้อแนะนำที่ให้มีการตัดสินใจในอนาคตโดยทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงความขัดแย้งและรักษาวัฒนธรรมที่มีอยู่ โดยคำนึงถึงการเผาศพที่ไม่มีผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม
