Abstract
A numerical study of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami characteristics is presented in this work. The effects of numerical grid spacing and coordinate system to an accuracy of tsunami predictions in simulation were investigated using the FUNWAVE program. The results showed that the numerical grid spacing and coordinate system can affect the accuracy of tsunami predictions. Furthermore, the Tsunami Implementation for Multiple segments of Earthquake (TIME) program was developed in this thesis to simulate the tsunami generated by earthquakes with dynamic rupture. The TIME program was validated by a comparison with FUNWAVE. The simulated results showed 8.0 % error in predicted maximum height and 1.0 % error of first arrival time of the wave. In addition, TIME was also used to study the effect of the number of fault segments and dynamic rupture. The results showed that the accuracy of tsunami predictions does not depend on the number of fault segments, but depends on specific characteristics of tsunami source. In addition, the dynamic rupture of tsunami source affects the accuracy of tsunami predictions as a minor effect by the errors in maximum height and the first arrival time were 4.6 % and 0.8 %, respectively.
งานชิ้นนี้นำเสนอการศึกษาคุณลักษณะเฉพาะของคลื่นสึนามิปี พ.ศ. 2547 จากการศึกษาผลของระยะห่างของตารางเชิงตัวเลขกับระบบพิกัดต่อความแม่นยำในการพยากรณ์คลื่นสึนามิโดยใช้โปรแกรมแบบจำลอง FUNWAVE ผลที่ได้จากแบบจำลองแสดงให้เห็นว่า ทั้งความห่างเชิงตัวเลขและระบบพิกัดส่งผลต่อความแม่นยำต่อการทำนายความสูงและเวลาเดินทางของคลื่นสึนามิ งานวิจัยนี้ยังพัฒนาโปรแกรมจำลองคลื่นสึนามิชื่อ Tsunami Implementation for Multiple segments of Earthquake หรือ TIME เพื่อจำลองคลื่นสึนามิจากกระบวนการยกตัวแบบพลวัตของแผ่นดินไหว การแสดงผลความแม่นยำของการทำนายคลื่นสึนามิจากโปรแกรมนี้ถูกทดสอบด้วยการเปรียบเทียบผลการทดลองจากการใช้โปรแกรม FUNWAVE ซึ่งมีค่าความคลาดเคลื่อนอยู่ที่ 8.0 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ของค่าความสูงของคลื่น และ 0.7 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ของการเดินทางของคลื่น นอกจากนี้โปรแกรม TIME ยังใช้ศึกษาผลจากจำนวนแผ่น และ การยกตัวแบบพลวัตของแหล่งกำเนิดคลื่น จากการศึกษาพบว่าความแม่นยำของการทำนายคลื่นไม่ขึ้นกับจำนวนแผ่นแต่ขึ้นกับลักษณะเฉพาะของแหล่งกำเนิดคลื่นสึนามิ และการยกตัวแบบพลวัตนั้นไม่สำคัญต่อความแม่นยำของการทำนายคลื่น โดยจากค่าความคลาดเคลื่อนของค่าความสูงคลื่นและการเดินทางของคลื่น อยู่ที่ 4.6 กับ 0.8 เปอร์เซ็นต์ตามลำดับ
