Abstract
The purpose of this survey research was to examine factors affecting substance abuse by RTAF airmen at DonMuang Air Force Base. 1,093 RTAF airmen, aged 18- 28 years (averaging 21.42 years) in section 2005/2. RTAF Security Force Command, ACC, and the RTAF Directorate of Medical Services, ASC, were screened and classified into 5 groups using interview data and urine screening tests by officers from the Division of Preventive Medicine. Data was then collected using questionnaire interviews of people who had never been substance abusers. Data was also collected from 2 other groups: from 588 RTAF airmen who was infrequent abusers (equal to or less than 3 times), and 183 frequent abusers. For the majority, the education level was at M.1-3 or less. They were earned about 3,001-6,000 baht per month, were single and Buddhist. Education, occupation, income, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking were major predisposing factors to substance abuse among the RTAF airmen at 0.05 level. Close contact with persons involved with substance abuse and substance abusers in the community were major enabling factors to substance abuse by the RTAF airmen at 0.05 level. Furthermore, violence in families, such as quarrels between parents, or between brothers, sisters, and cousins, and having friends involved with illegal substance use, or who were frequent substance abusers, were major reinforcing factors to substance abuse by the RTAF airmen at 0.05 level. This study emphasizes the role of education, occupation, alcohol, smoking, and child rearing on substance abuse abuse by RTAF airmen, and also the importance of family environment, school and community.
