Abstract
Grounded on the framework of the systemic functional grammar of Theme-Rheme analysis (Thompson, 2004) and the model of thematic progression (Dane?, 1974), this study was conducted to investigate the frequencies of thematic progression types (e.g., Linear, Constant, or Derived) in the IELTS academic and IELTS general training reading comprehension texts in an effort to further understanding of the structure of reading texts in one of the world-renowned standardized tests. The study recruited overall 60 IELTS reading comprehension practice texts, 30 from academic and 30 from general training schemes. The texts, then, were categorized into three thematic progression types. The findings revealed that the most frequently used thematic progression was the Derived type. Another considerable finding was that there was less frequency of Derived thematic progression in the general training than the academic reading comprehension texts. Moreover, there were some common elements in textual construction. The element allocation is a significant factor to differentiate the texts.
งานวิจัยฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นโดยอาศัยแนวคิดพื้นฐานของ Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้ประยุกต์หลักการการวิเคราะห์ Theme-Rheme ของ Thompson (2004) และการวิเคราะห์รูปแบบของการพัฒนาของสาร ออกเป็น 3 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ Linear Constant และ Derived ของ Dane?, (1974) มาเป็นกรอบแนวคิดหลักในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ทั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้หลักการดังกล่าวเพื่อวิเคราะห์บทความจากแบบทดสอบเรื่องการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจใน IELTS สองประเภท อันได้แก่ ประเภทวิชาการ (academic) และ ประเภททั่วไป (general training) จากการรวบรวมบทความ จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 60 บทความ แบ่งเป็นประเภทวิชาการ (academic) 30 บทความ และประเภททั่วไป (general training) 30 บทความ แล้วนำมาวิเคราะห์รูปแบบของการพัฒนาของสารในบทความดังกล่าว ผลการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลพบว่า (1) รูปแบบของการพัฒนาของข้อความที่พบมากที่สุดในแบบทดสอบเรื่องการอ่านใน IELTS ทั้งสองประเภท คือ รูปแบบ Derived (2) อัตราส่วนของรูปแบบการพัฒนาของสารรูปแบบ Derived ในแบบทดสอบเรื่องการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจในแบบทดสอบ IELTS แต่ละประเภทมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ และ (3) ผู้วิจัยพบว่าในการพัฒนาของสารในแบบทดสอบ IELTS ทั้งสองประเภท จะมีองค์ประกอบหลักของบทความที่เหมือนกันอยู่ หากแต่องค์ประกอบดังกล่าวจะมีการจัดเรียงและเชื่อมต่อในรูปแบบต่างๆ กัน ซึ่งจะมี ผลต่อความยากในการอ่านสารนั้นๆ ด้วย
