Various levels of arsenic have been found in the groundwater in the Hanoi area for the past ten years. In some areas, arsenic levels are far above the standard level for drinking water. There is a large scale threat of arsenic poisoning in the Hanoi area and the risk is high because residents still use arsenic-contaminated water for their daily consumption with little or no treatment. This study aims to assess the level of awareness of Hanoi residents who are dependent on groundwater regarding arsenic contamination. This study also aims to provide solutions and recommendations as well as to enhance residents' knowledge of arsenic contamination. The objectives of this study are: (1) to determine the socio-economic and demographic characteristics and the problems related to arsenic contamination; (2) to determine the awareness level of households about arsenic contamination in their drinking water; (3) to determine the relationship between socio-economic and demographic characteristics and arsenic knowledge; (4) to determine how successful the local government is in disseminating information about arsenic contamination in the studied area; and (5) to assess the reactions of households when they are given a basic knowledge concerning the arsenic contamination problem. In-depth interviews were used to determine general information in the studied area. A household questionnaire interview was used to assess a respondent's knowledge regarding fundamental concerns about the arsenic contamination problem. Three communes with low, medium and high arsenic levels in the groundwater were selected. In total, 401 households were interviewed. This study found that awareness of residents in the three areas was low. Location, gender, occupation, household annual income and the level of education significantly influenced residents' knowledge about arsenic contamination, while household size and age did not. Farmers, laborers, people with a low household income and women had the lowest levels of awareness. Furthermore, the level of education, occupation and household income could be used to predict their knowledge level. These findings could be useful for the government in preventing and mitigating arsenic poisoning in specific high arsenic risk areas and in groups such as women, farmers, laborers and those with a low education.
