dc.description.abstractSince 2020, the Chinese government has promulgated a series of educational policies to promote high-quality development in education. To align with national and societal advancements, it is imperative to revise undergraduate music education degree program. This qualitative study investigates the factors affecting the development of undergraduate music education degree program in China. Thirty key informants from 10 universities in Sichuan Province (including 20 senior students and 10 alumni) were selected for semi-structured interviews. Grounded theory methodology was employed to analyze the data. The findings identify five factors affecting the program: Curriculum applicability; The most helpful course; Development of key competencies; Development of scientific research and academic writing skills; Essential competencies required for music teachers in primary and secondary schools. Aligned with the strategic goals of China’s Education Modernization 2035 initiative, recommendations are proposed for curriculum optimization and competency development in higher education. This study offers a diversified perspective and empirical foundation for enhancing the quality of undergraduate music education degree program in China, providing a reference framework for program revisions in other provinces.
