The acquisition order of English grammatical morphemes in Thai EFL learners

Abstract

This study aims to identify the acquisition order of English grammatical morphemes in Thai EFL learners and to examine whether the order in Thai EFL learners follows the natural order proposed by Krashen (1977).This current study is quantitative research, which falls into focused-descriptive and cross-sectional approaches. The researcher employed two language tasks: the English Written Production Task (EWPT) and the English Oral Production Task (EOPT) as the research instruments to investigate the acquisition order of nine English grammatical morphemes. One hundred ten college students participated in the study as they were recruited by simple random sampling. The data were analysed using Target-Like Use (Pica, 1983) accuracy rate formula and presented as a percentage accuracy. The revealed order was, subsequently, compared to the natural order using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient.The findings revealed that progressive -ing, auxiliary be, and copula be were the first three earliest morphemes as performed by Thai EFL college students. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the NOH order and those of Thai EFL college students (rs = .900, p < .001).
