The effect of using hearing aid on quality of life and cognitive performance in Thai older persons with hearing disability

Abstract

Hearing impairment commonly occurs in elders leading to negative outcomes such ascommunication, participation and risks of early dementia which affect the quality of life. This studyaimed (1) to discover the effect of using hearing aid on quality of life and cognitive performanceand (2) to examine factors influence on prevalence of using hearing aid among the elders withhearing disability. A multi-phase of mixed-methods were employed. At first, a retrospective study was executed to examine the prevalence of hearing aid using and its significant influencing factors.Next, the participants were recruited into a cross-sectional study. WHOQOL-OLD and MoCA wereused to evaluate their quality of life and cognitive performance, respectively. Last, an in-depth interview with thematic analysis was conducted to explore subjective influencing factors toward hearing aid usage. The findings showed that only 25.63 percent of elders with hearing disability usedhearing aid. The three significant influencing factors included age, types of health insurance and disability registration were correlated to prevalence of hearing aid using . A "Sensory Abilities (SAB)" aspect of WHOQOL-OLD and "Delayed Recall" functions of cognitive performance showed statistically significant difference between hearing aid users and non-users.The qualitative study pointed out six subjective indications: societal role, disability perspective, social support, medical & personnel, rights accessibility, and benefit of hearing aid influenced decisions in using a hearing aid in those elderly with hearing disability.This research applied an integral framework of the theory of everything as lens to reflect those findings. Even though all indications were allocated into different quadrants, each one was still functioning as a part of a whole to formulate the absolute decision of hearing aid using by individuals. The researcher discovered that the effects of using a hearing aid was not only involved with physical and medical issues, but also subjective values and perspectives, society, rights, and healthcare system.
