Abstract
Non-Harmonic trio consist of horn, bass and drums which provide the player more flexibility and space for communication while improvising. One of the Non-Harmornic jazz trio was formed by Sonny Rollins and release the album Way Out West in 1957. Compositions played by non-harmonic trio contain a detail such as harmorny, motif development, ostinato. And the texture of the trio with chord instrument could not sound the same. An essemble which doesn't have chord instruments tend to have a hollow timbre/sound color, that influences the musician to feel more free and more space. These introduce some new ideas and not to be forced by a progession that provide by chordal instrument. The way each instrument performs in a non-harmonic trio is different from in a quartet or quintet. In this sutdy four new tunes were composed for Saxophone, double bass and drums. The rhythm section has more involvement in the melody by playing a unison, ostinato, or sometimes playing a melody. At some point, the saxophonist also plays the bass line to accompany the bassist or the drummer during the solo. The melody part of nonharmonic jazz trio compositions can determine the voicing of the chord instruments that can occur in a wide tonality of the chord, whereas the bass line defines the root to identify a chord progression. In the future information presented in this research as initial ideas to develop composing skills, and applying them in other ensemble combinations
