Effects of respirable dust on respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function among pig farm workers : closed system housing in eastern of Thailand

Abstract

Pig Production may expose workers to potential hazards that have harmful effects on respiratory health from dust and various factors in pig housing. This study was a cross sectional study conducted among 246 pig farm workers (Animal husbandry and workers) in a closed system housing 20 farms in eastern of Thailand. The objectives were to study the association between concentrations of respirable dust, personal factors, personal behaviors and duration of work associated with respiratory symptoms and abnormality of pulmonary function among pig farm workers. The data were collected by respiratory symptoms questionnaires, respirable dust sampling with the NIOSH methods 0600 and a pulmonary function test. Results showing factors associated with respiratory symptoms and abnormality of pulmonary functions were as follows: smoking (p<0.001), age (p0.012) and Body Mass Index (p0.036) were significant associated with respiratory symptoms. The duration of work was associated with significant respiratory symptoms and abnormality of pulmonary functions (p0.045, p0.036). Finally, concentrations of respiratory dust, personal factors (sex) and personal behaviors (wearing a mask) had no significant association with respiratory symptoms and abnormality of pulmonary functions among pig farm workers (p>0.05).

เกษตรกรรมในฟาร์มเลี้ยงสุกรมีโอกาสที่สัมผัสอันตรายที่อาจส่งผลทำให้เกิดโรคระบบทางเดินหายใจจากฝุ่นละอองและปัจจัยอื่น ๆ ในโรงเรือนเลี้ยงสุกร การศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นการศึกษาภาคตัดขวาง ในพนักงานเลี้ยงสุกร ซึ่งประกอบด้วย สัตวบาล และพนักงานเลี้ยงสุกรในระบบโรงเรือนปิด เขตภาคตะวันออกของประเทศไทย จำนวน 246 ราย จำนวน 20 ฟาร์ม โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปริมาณฝุ่นละอองขนาดเล็กที่เข้าสู่ระบบทางเดินหายใจ ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล พฤติกรรมส่วนบุคคล และระยะเวลาการทำงานที่ ส่งผลต่ออาการระบบทางเดินหายใจและสมรรถภาพปอดที่ผิดปกติของพนักงานเลี้ยงสุกรโดยการตอบแบบสอบถามอาการทางระบบเดินหายใจ ตรวจวัดการรับสัมผัสฝุ่นละอองขนาดเล็กที่ตัวบุคคลโดยใช้วิธีการ NIOSH Method 0600 และตรวจสมรรถภาพปอดของพนักงานเลี้ยงสุกร ผลการศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของปัจจัยต่างๆ พบว่าการสูบบุหรี่ (p<0.001) อายุ (p=0.012) และค่าดัชนีมวลกาย (p=0.036) มีความสัมพันธ์ที่ส่งผลต่ออาการระบบทางเดินหายใจระยะเวลาการทา งานมีความสัมพันธ์ที่ส่งผลต่ออาการระบบทางเดินหายใจและผลความผิดปกติของสมรรถภาพปอด (p=0.045, p=0.036) ตามลา ดับ และปริมาณฝุ่นละอองขนาดเล็กที่เข้าสู่ระบบทางเดินหายใจ ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล (เพศ) และพฤติกรรมส่วนบุคคล (การสวมใส่ผ้าปิดจมูก) ไม่พบความสัมพันธ์ที่ส่งผลต่ออาการระบบทางเดินหายใจ และผลความผิดปกติของสมรรถภาพปอด (p>0.05)
