Iconquery : a visual query language

Abstract

To query information from database, there are two common approaches: embedded code in a program and write a query using query language such as Structured Query Language (SQL). The users for both approaches require some technical or programming skill. Novice users would consider their textual user interface unfriendly. The new approach to solve these problems is to use Visual Query Language approach, where a query is construct in graphically. This study takes this approach with the conjecture that the graphical interface would help users write a database query faster and make less syntactical mistake. A prototype tool called IconQuery was design to test this conjecture. The IconQuery will allow user to create a query by composing icons and then transform them into SQL statement.

การสอบถามข้อมูลจากฐานข้อมูลนั้น มีวิธีการสอบถาม อยู่ 2 แนวความคิดใหญ่ คือ การ Embeded Code เข้าไปใน โปรแกรม และการใช้ Query Language เช่นการใช้ภาษา SQL แต่ผู้ที่จะสามารถสร้าง Query โดยใช้แนวความคิดทั้งสองนั้น จำเป็นจะต้องมีความรู้ความสามารถเชิงเทคนิค หรือมีทักษะใน การ Programming แต่สิ่งที่ผู้ใช้มีความเห็นร่วมกันเกี่ยวกับ สิ่งที่เป็นอุปสรรคสำหรับแนวความคิดทั้ง 2 นั้นคือ User Interface ที่เป็นแบบ Text ซึ่งไม่ User Friendly ทำให้เป็นปัญหาสำหรับผู้ใช้ ดังนั้นจึงมีการแนวความคิดใหม่เข้ามาใช้แก้ไขปัญหา ดังกล่าวเรียกว่า "Visual Query Language" โดยแนว ความคิดนี้จะสร้าง Query ในรูปแบบกราฟฟิก วิทยานิพนธ์ เล่มนี้ได้นำแนวความคิดนี้มาใช้โดยที่ผู้เขียนมีความเชื่อว่า การใช้ Graphical Interface นั้นจะช่วยให้ผู้ใช้สร้าง ข้อสอบถามได้รวดเร็วขึ้น อีกทั้งยังช่วยลดข้อผิดพลาดในเรื่อง ของ Syntax เพื่อเป็นการสนับสนุนความแนวความคิดที่กล่าวมาแล้วนั้น จึงได้มีการสร้าง IconQuery ขึ้น โดยผู้ใช้ IconQuery จะสามารถสร้าง Query จากการประกอบกันของ Icons จากนั้น IconQuery จะทำการแปล Icons เหล่านั้นให้เป็นภาษา SQL
